Safe to Combine

Can You Take Omega-3 and Vitamin D3 Together?

Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin D3 are among the most commonly recommended supplements worldwide, and taking them together offers both practical and biological advantages. Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires dietary fat for optimal absorption. The omega-3 fats in fish oil provide an ideal absorption vehicle for Vitamin D3, enhancing its uptake in the small intestine. This makes combining them at the same meal a smart strategy to optimize the bioavailability of both nutrients.

Beyond the absorption benefit, these two supplements share overlapping and complementary mechanisms for reducing inflammation and supporting immune function. Omega-3s (EPA and DHA) produce specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) that actively resolve inflammation, while Vitamin D3 modulates innate and adaptive immune responses. Together, they help you optimize both anti-inflammatory and immune-regulatory pathways, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic inflammatory conditions or autoimmune tendencies.

The VITAL trial, one of the largest randomized controlled trials of its kind, studied both Omega-3 and Vitamin D3 supplementation in over 25,000 participants and found benefits for cardiovascular health and cancer prevention. Many functional medicine practitioners consider this combination foundational for overall health maintenance.

How They Interact

Omega-3 fatty acids provide a lipid matrix that enhances micellar solubilization and intestinal absorption of fat-soluble Vitamin D3. Additionally, both nutrients independently modulate NF-kB inflammatory signaling and T-cell differentiation, providing complementary anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.

Timing Advice

Take Omega-3 and Vitamin D3 together with your largest meal of the day to maximize fat-soluble vitamin absorption. Morning or afternoon dosing is preferred, as late-night Vitamin D3 may interfere with melatonin production.

Our Recommendation

Combine 2,000-5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 with 1,000-2,000 mg of combined EPA/DHA daily with a meal. Some high-quality fish oil supplements already include Vitamin D3. If taking them separately, simply take them at the same meal for best results.
