Can You Take Lion's Mane and Ashwagandha Together?

Lion's mane mushroom and ashwagandha are a popular nootropic and adaptogen pairing that addresses both cognitive performance and stress resilience. Lion's mane promotes NGF (nerve growth factor) synthesis, supporting neuroplasticity, myelin maintenance, and the growth and maintenance of neurons — effects particularly relevant for long-term cognitive health and neuroprotection. Ashwagandha reduces cortisol and stress reactivity, protects neurons from glucocorticoid-induced damage, and supports mood and sleep quality.

The combination is particularly relevant because chronic stress (and its associated cortisol elevation) is itself a major cause of neurodegeneration — cortisol damages the hippocampus, impairs memory consolidation, and reduces BDNF levels. Ashwagandha counteracts these stress-induced neurodegenerative effects while lion's mane actively stimulates neural growth and repair. Together they represent a neuroprotective and neuroregenerative stack that addresses both the cause (stress) and the solution (nerve repair).

Both supplements have been studied for cognitive decline — lion's mane in a 2009 Japanese RCT showed significant improvements in cognitive function in mild cognitive impairment, while ashwagandha has shown improvements in memory, attention, and processing speed. The combination is increasingly popular in nootropic stacks targeting long-term brain health.

How They Interact

Lion's mane hericenones and erinacines stimulate synthesis of NGF and BDNF, promoting neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Ashwagandha withanolides reduce glucocorticoid receptor binding, lower cortisol-induced hippocampal damage, and restore BDNF levels suppressed by chronic stress. The two mechanisms operate in a protective-and-regenerative synergy.

Timing Advice

Lion's mane: 500–1,000 mg with meals (effects are gradual, build over weeks). Ashwagandha: 300–600 mg in the morning and/or evening. Both can be taken together with breakfast without any interaction.

Our Recommendation

A well-rounded brain health stack combining neuroprotection (ashwagandha) with active neuroregeneration (lion's mane). Best suited for long-term cognitive health rather than acute performance enhancement. Allow 4–8 weeks for full effects to develop. Choose quality fruiting body lion's mane extract for active hericenone content.
